Not everyone is agreed that computers (and broadband) are essential to education, or at least to formal education at primary or secondary level. Some even think it’s a cop-out – irrelevant to proper schooling i.e. reading, writing, critical thinking and an ability to articulate thought clearly. After all, when it comes to literacy levels (with Ireland pretty much near the bottom of the league in Western Europe) no computer programme can compensate for a lack of grounding in those areas.

True as far as it goes. However, surely it makes more sense to tackle such problems using the new technologies – as well as the more established ones?
